The 2016 Barolo Mosconi shows all the attributes of this site to great effect, specifically a feeling of volume that is not found in the other Barolos. Dark red fruit, cedar, iron and scorched earth add layers of nuance. Mosconi Barolos almost always have a chunky, four-square-ish feel, which is very much the case here, the wine’s considerable charms notwithstanding. The Mosconi spent 22 months in used 500-liter tonneaux. 94pts Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com
A new wine for this producer. Raised in 500 litre barrels, which is OK here, though not ideal for my tastes. Not sure why it’s priced higher than the Ravera di Monforte, though maybe to do with smaller production.
Red fruit, sage, spice, almond, quite floral too, but powerful and latent. It shows a little oak influence, though not overt, and the underlying power and ‘mineral’ feel to the wine, and the stuffing will serve it very well with time in the cellar. Tannin is firm and mouth-coating, with freshness and fine length to close. The feel of it is very convincing. 94pts GARY WALSH, www.winefront.com.au
